Made of insoluble crushed quartzite or granie, grit is necessary for the healthy development of the gizzard, which aids in digestion and allows for maximum nutrient benefits from poultry feed. Layer grit is recommended at 20+ weeks for all hens and roosters. Layer grit may be too large for bantams or smaller hens; if so, continue to provide them grower grit.
